Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the nose mucosa, caused by an allergic reaction, leading to the emergence of symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, dry cough and nose and throat scratching.

This condition usually arises after contact with allergic substances such as dust, animal hair, pollen or some plants, so it is more frequent during spring or autumn.

What to do: Treatment should be guided by the allergologist or otolaryngologist, who may indicate the use of antiallergic remedies, and it is essential to avoid contact with the substance that caused allergy. See more details about treatment for allergic rhinitis.

3. Exposure to annoying substances

Exposure to irritating substances can irritate the throat and may also cause itching in the throat and cough. See other causes of itching in the throat and cough.

The main annoying substances that can cause itching in the throat are cigarette smoke or car exhaust tubes, or cleaning products, for example

What to do: Avoid exposure to substances that cause itching in their throat or use soothing pads that have honey, lemon or ginger in their composition, or gargling with salt and salt -based solutions, as directed by the otorhinolaryngologist.

4. Side effects of medicines

Some medications, especially antihypertensive, such as captopril or enalapril, may cause itching in the throat and dry cough as a side effect.

What to do: Usually this side effect is decreasing over time. However, if it persists and causes much discomfort, it may be necessary to replace the medicine. Under no circumstances should the treatment be interrupted or change doses on their own.

5. FOOD ALLERGY

Food allergy consists of an exaggerated inflammatory reaction to a specific substance present in the food and may manifest in different regions of the body such as the skin, eyes, nose or throat.

In addition, swelling may also occur in various regions of the body, and may reach the mouth, eyelids and tongue and cause serious breathing difficulties.

What to do: Treatment consists of the administration of antihistamines such as loratadine or cetirizine, or corticosteroids such as prednisolone, but in case of severe reaction, it may not be sufficient and therefore the urgency should go immediately because allergy may evolve into anaphylactic shock.

It is also very important to do a food allergy test to avoid foods that are the source of the problem. See how the allergy test is done.

6. Respiratory infections

Some respiratory infections such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis or cold may leave the throat scratching before evolving for more severe symptoms such as pain or inflammation on site.

Symptoms may also include runny nose, cough, fever, itching in the ear, goose bumps and discomfort.

What to do: Treatment should be done by the general practitioner or otolaryngologist who may indicate the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or painkillers to relieve symptoms, or antibiotics if you have any bacterial infection. Check out the main treatments for tonsillitis.

7. Gastroesophageal Reflux

Gastroesophageal reflux consists of the return of stomach content to the esophagus towards the mouth, causing pain, unpleasant taste and, in some cases, itching in the throat due to the irritation caused by the acidic content of the stomach.

This happens when the muscle that should prevent stomach acid from coming out of its interior does not work properly.

What to do: The treatment is done by the gastroenterologist who may indicate the use of gastric protective antacids, such as sodium bicarbonate or omeprazole, for example, as they inhibit the production of acid by the stomach, relieving symptoms. Learn more about treatment options for gastroesophageal reflux.

8. Postnasal drip

The nose and nasal breasts constantly produce mucus that drips to the throat. However, in the case of virus, allergy or sinusitis infection, mucus production can be increased, so it can be more easily perceived.

This excessive mucus can irritate the sore throat and cause itching, which can get worse when lying down.

What to do: Getting hydrated and using a humidifier can help make mucus more liquid, and using throat pads and sprays can help relieve discomfort.
