Hydrogel Ointment: What is it, what it is for and how to use

Hydrogel ointment is a gel indicated for the treatment of wounds, as it promotes hydration, healing and protection of the skin, as well as the elimination of dead tissue.

This ointment should be used with indication of the dermatologist or general cynic and applied as directed by the nurse, being found with the names Curatec Hydrogel, Solositis Hydrogel Amorfo or Askina Gel, for example.

In addition, hydrogel ointment can be found associated with alginate, with the commercial names of Curatec Hydrogel Alginate or Dersani hydrogel with alginate.

The ointment hydrogel is suitable for:

  • Dry, superficial or deep wounds, with or without infection;
  • Rosy, smooth and granular wounds;
  • Venous or arterial ulcers;
  • Rate or pressure ulcers;
  • Diabetic foot ulcer;
  • Small high school burns;
  • Wounds with partial or total loss of tissues;
  • Skin cuts;
  • Post-trauma areas.

The ointment hydrogel is indicated in these cases to promote the removal of the wound dead tissue and stimulate skin healing.

How to use

To use ointment hydrogel, it is important to use gloves to avoid infection of the wound and, before using the ointment, a wound cleaning with 0.9% saline should be cleaned and dry the skin with the use of sterile gauze.

Then apply the ointment hydrogel inside the wound and make a curative with sterile gauze.

The application of the ointment hydrogel should be done for a maximum of 3 days in a row and the frequency of dressing of the dressings should be done as directed by the nurse.

Hydrogel in the dressing form is of unique use and should not be reused and should therefore be thrown in the trash after dressing.

Possible side effects

The side effects of the ointment hydrogel are rare, however, intense burning, redness or skin irritation where the ointment was applied and should be communicated to the doctor and nurse responsible for the treatment.

In addition, use and seek medical help immediately or the nearest emergency room if symptoms of hydrogel allergy appear. Learn how to identify the symptoms of allergic reaction.

Who should not use

The ointment hydrogel should not be used by people allergic to the gel of the formula or alginate in the ointments containing this substance.

This ointment should also not be used to treat burns on 3rd degree skin or applied to the eyes, mouth or nose.

In addition, ointment hydrogel should not be used for aesthetic purposes such as increasing gluteus, thighs and breasts or softening wrinkles and expression lines. In these cases, there is a specific hydrogel for aesthetic purposes, which is different from hydrogel ointment for wound treatment.
