January 22, 2025 commemorates Metropolitan Philip of Moscow and All Rus’. He lived during the time of the king Ivan IV the Terrible and was known as an exposer of him and the morals that reigned in those days. On this day, after a series of winter holidays, we returned to our usual work, cleaned the house, and prepared for spring.

Who was Saint Philip?

Fedor Stepanovich Kolychev was from a great boyar family. He was actively prepared for public service, but his very God-fearing mother actively introduced him to the faith. And it was to prayer that the boy’s soul lay from his youth. However, he did not go against the will of his father and served at court until he was 30 years old. Fyodor was welcomed at court and loved Tsar Vasily IIIthe young Ivan the Terrible sympathized with him.

However, after the Nizhny Novgorod riot of 1537, the entire Kolychev family fell into disgrace. Then Fyodor secretly left for Moscow. At that moment, he especially actively wanted to move away from worldly life, because of this, Fyodor went north, reached Lake Onega, and the Solovetsky Monastery, where he asked to become a novice. After 1.5 years of service, Fedor was tonsured a monk with the name Philip. The abbot of the monastery appointed him as his successor Abbot Alexywhen he felt that the end of his earthly life was approaching. Under Philip, Solovki flourished and became the cultural and industrial center of Northern Primorye. However, Philip did not focus exclusively on administrative functions, but often went alone to the pristine shores of the lake, where he prayed fervently. Somehow he appeared there Christ in a crown of thorns. And then a spring miraculously appeared at this place, over which a chapel was erected.

Ivan the Terrible favored the monastery – it grew lands at the will of the tsar, and received expensive church utensils as gifts. And then the tsar completely supported Philip in appointing the new metropolitan of all Rus’. He accepted the great position with great reluctance, but began to govern intelligently and well for Orthodoxy. Under him, churches were actively built and book printing developed. However, Philip did not put up with the revelry of the guardsmen, which became the reason for the tsar’s disfavor. As a result, Philip was defrocked and sent under arrest, and later into eternal exile to one of the Tver monasteries. Since Philip’s authority was enormous even in captivity, the king sent an assassin to him. Philip was strangled in his cell and then hastily buried.
